A temple in Canada’s Brampton has cancelled an Indian consulate event after police cited significant security threats amid the ongoing protests and tensions that erupted following a recent pro-Khalistani attack on Hindu devotees in the area.
In an open letter, the management of Brampton’s Triveni Mandir stated that Canadians now feel unsafe visiting Hindu temples and called for immediate measures to ensure their safety and security.
“We are deeply saddened that Canadians now feel unsafe coming to Hindu Temples in Canada. We call on Peel Police to address the threats being circulated against Brampton Triveni Mandir and provide security guarantees to the Canadian Hindu Community and the general public,” the open letter said.
A Life Certificate event was scheduled at the temple by the Indian Consulate on November 17. The temple authorities have now announced that it has been cancelled due to official intelligence from the police, stating that there is an “extremely high and imminent threat level of violent protests”.
“On the advice of Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah, we must make the appropriate decision to cancel to ensure the safety of Brampton Triveni Mandir devotees, community visitors, and the general public. We apologise to all community members who were depending on the event,” the Board of Directors of the temple said.
On November 4, a pro-Khalistani mob who staged a demonstration near the temple to mark the 40th anniversary of the Sikh riots, attacked several Hindu devotees at the Hindu Sabha Temple in Brampton.
India swiftly condemned the incident, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi denouncing the “deliberate attack” and “cowardly attempts to intimidate our diplomats”. The incident also provoked widespread international criticism, particularly aimed at Canada, and a series of protests in the area.
