Nadenbousch (1824 - 1892), of Berkeley County, Virginia (now West Virginia), was a founding member, principle organizer, and captain of the Berkeley Border Guards. In October, 1859 the Company was ordered to Harper’s Ferry by Governor Henry A. Wise. Quite probably the first to arrive, they participated in quelling John Brown’s insurrection, assisted in his capture, and were on duty at his execution. At the secession of Virginia, the Guards were called into service and became Company D, 2nd Virginia Infantry, a part of the legendary Stonewall Brigade, Colonel Nadenbousch commanding.
