Vintage Tohono O'odham Papago Coiled Large Tray with Handles

Tohono O'Odham formerly known as Papago basket plaque from the 1970's.  It is a large coiled basket tray with handles and with a geometric design recognized as a moving water symbol. This is a beautiful example of the fine weaving of the Tohono O'odham. Beautiful!

Condition: Pre-owned - Great condition - No missing stitches and very firm body. It has a lovely patina throughout but very little fading, considering age.
Tohono O'odham, formerly known as the Papago Indians, create beautiful baskets using materials from their harsh but beautiful environment. I have enjoyed visiting their homeland many times, and appreciate the beauty of the basketry.
Materials used are yucca, bear grass and black Devil’s Claw. Indian Baskets were primarily utilitarian and used to carry water, firewood, prepare food and store items. The two primary styles of basketry are the split stitch and coil methods.
