Used Navajo Coiled Ceremonial Wedding Basket with 4-Point Center Star.
This vintage basket features an
unusual
4 point inner star with spirit release and 9 black points on the outer circle
. It measures
9 3/4" in diameter x 1 1/2" deep and has a herringbone stitch finish at the rim.
It is in
good condition
with minor wear to a few stitches and has a nice patina
.
These baskets are used in a
number of Navajo ceremonies including weddings
. At the end of the ceremony,
the medicine man receives the basket in partial payment for his services
. He will usually sell it to a trader who re-sells it when another ceremony is to be performed. We purchased this basket from a trader in
Shiprock, NM
. Many Navajo believe that
some of the ceremonial power is retained by the basket.
