Vintage Native American Authentic Papago Indian (Tohono O'odham) Basket With Lid
Handmade basket by by Papago Indians of Arizona.

This split stitch basket is made of Bear Grass & sewn with Yucca
in such a manner that the coil is exposed to form part of the pattern.
A lot of work, effort and knowledge is required to prepare
the material even before the weaving begins.
The weaving is a very slow process & one of the oldest of Indian crafts.
Overall measurement with lid 6" W (side handle to side handle) x 4.25" H
The beautifully intricate & tight weave demonstrate the outstanding
quality and artistry that went into the making of this piece.
As one expert shared with me, the smaller ones are
often the most
difficult to make.
