What a wonderfulMi'kmaq basket - a full size basketry tea cup and saucer! (MicMac is USA spelling -Mi'kmaq is Canadian spelling). While I have seen a few miniature tea cup baskets - this is the first full size one! Very unique and charming basket!!
The cup is 3.5" top diameter (affixed to the saucer so not sure of exact diameter at bottom, but tapered cup shape) ... It is 3" high to top of rim. The handle is 2" high, 1" extended beyond cup and 1/2" higher than the cup. The saucer is 6" in diameter and flat on bottom, rim is 1/2" high.
The tea cup/saucer basket is from Elsibogtog First Nation which is located near Rexton, N.B. Canada. It belonged to a friend from there who is thinking of moving, so is downsizing his home and possessions. He recently sold me some of his basket collection. The name on the bottom is blurred and my friend was not sure who had made it or how long he had it.
Made on a foundation of brown ash splints, traditional basketry material of Maine and
Eastern Canadian basketmakers, this has plain sweetgrass used for all of the
weavers of the cup and for the outer part of the saucer.... saucer has a few ash splint weavers. The cup and saucer have rims wrapped with plain tidal sweetgrass and secured with ash splints - cup has a plain ash splint wrap at rim, saucer has a V shaped rim wrap at rim. At bottom of cup is a small braid of sweetgrass tied with ends making a decorative touch.
