Sheldon Dibble, one of the early missionaries to the Sandwich Island recognized the interest in and the need to record the early history of Hawaii appreciating the inevitable loss of valuable information if this was not affected soon. His first
HISTORY OF THE SANDWICH ISLANDS
was published in 1843 with this reprint being issued by Thomas Thrum just after the turn of the century. Today, it has again been reprinted as a paperback due to the rarity of even this copy from 1909.   Of related interest, Rev. Dibble around 1845 also published THOUGHTS ON MISSIONS, one of the original editions of which is now available in the Rare Books Section of our Mandarin Books Hawaii eBay store, Item #390474458692.
Mr. Dibble furnishes an excellent history that includes the missionary take on many aspects of the Hawaiian peoples, their culture and also offers some very intersting comparisons between Hawaii and the other Polynesian cultures. One of the sought after records of Hawaiian history,
A HISTORY OF THE SANDWICH ISLANDS
