    Description

There is a pincushion basket of coiled sweetgrass and a large scissors holder of birch bark with smaller quill hummingbird  that accompany this 9" in diameter large sewing basket. Three porcupine quill flowers surround the hovering ruby throated hummingbird on a large birch bark medallion that is atop this large round sewing basket by Paul St John, Mohawk.  The flowers of bright blue and violet have yellow centers and are on pale green stems
    .
The hummingbird is of natural white with green, red and black dyed quills - the flowers are also of dyed quill, blue and violet.
The birch bark medallion is separated from the coiled sweetgrass of the basket's lid by a border of natural white porcupine quills
On this 9" round basket the  birch bark medallion on the lid's top is 7.75" diameter and the basket is 3" high.
    This basket
has birch bark at center of lid and used as the bottom -  then co
iled tidal sweetgrass.  The coiled sweetgrass pincushion basket is 2.5" in diameter and 1" high to the top of the basket rim.  The red velvet covered pincushion rises about 3/4" above the basket's rim making the total height of the pincushion about 3.25".   The scissor's case of birch bark contains a pair of stork scissors with gold color handles - the stork has it's bill (the scissor blades) in the air and is standing on the finger holes.  -  The scissors are a bit over 3.5" long and the scissors case 5.75" long and 3" across at top.  These are exceptionally nice, heavy scissors.  (I looked for this exact pair and could not find it - the detailed feet and the depth of incised feathers are nicer than any I found.  No maker's mark or other identification)
The ruby throated hummingbird is one of Paul's most beloved quill creations.  This sewing basket set has 2 and 3 flowers as well.    -  With the pincushion and scissors/scissors' case inside there is still ample room for other sewing tools and accessories - spools of thread, embroidery floss, a tin of buttons.  For anyone who sews or knits, crochets, tats etc - this is an ideal basket.  -  Perfect gift for someone you know who does any of these...
Paul St. John now lives in Maine.  He is an enrolled Mohawk tribal member.   He grew up on the Mohawk lands in New York, his father's homeland.  His mother is Passamaquoddy/MicMac/Maliseet - When I saw his work I knew immediately I needed to offer his great baskets.  While quill work and coiled sweetgrass baskets are  historically Maine Indian traditional crafts, currently no one here but Paul St. John is actively practicing this craft.  -  Passamaquoddy basket makers, Jeremy Frey and Otter, both have used some quill work on their baskets...  but quill work on coiled sweetgrass baskets are Paul St John's specialty.
Paul is shown in slideshow above with 2 of his works - one of them is a coiled sweetgrass basket with a side facing cardinal.   He not only does sweetgrass coil baskets and porcupine quill work on birch bark -- but also amazing dolls, Iroquois beadwork, MicMac beadwork,  great moccasins, knife sheaths, medicine bags and so much more!  He is truly a man of many (many many) talents!
Watch this store for more of his pieces.  Can't wait to see what he is going to create next.
THIS WILL WEIGH OVER 1# when boxed for shipping -  So you will pay exact cost to your location from mine in Maine.  Closer you are to Maine, less shipping will cost you!
