    Description

Being offered is a vintage Papago Indian, hand crafted and woven coiled basket.
The tribe is located in Arizona.
The basket has one of the more unusual designs for Papago baskets.  There are 4 encircling birds in flight, would guess these are eagles, but the birds look like dragons, however, I do not believe dragons were part of the culture.  this could have been a whimsical design for the tourist trade.  The basket shows incredible workmanship, down to the tiny pieces of inserted yucca making the eyes.
This basket is crafted from yucca, devil’s claw, and bear grass as the foundation with a strand of willow wrapped around the top edge.
The basket shows an age-related patina to the straw.
This is not unusual from exposure to light.
The weave is tight and intact so no loosening of the coiling.
The staves or wefts look all intact with no signs of weave separation
    .
    The basket is approx.
    8 7/8" wide and 5/8" tall
.  The price of SH includes insurance.
The Tohono O’odham, as they are known today, or “Papago” people as they were called by the Spanish, live in the Sonoran desert country of southwest Arizona.
The ancient name they called themselves was “Tohono Aw-aw-tam”, or the Desert People.
