Being offered is a vintage Papago Indian, hand crafted and woven coiled basket.
The tribe is located in Arizona.
This basket is craft from yucca, devil’s claw, and bear brass as the foundation, with willow stitching around the rim.
The basket shows age and wearing in places and shows an age-related patina to the straw.
This is not unusually from exposure to light over the decades.
There is soiling and dust in places.
The basket also has stains in places from dirt so could use a washing.
The weave is tight and intact so no loosening of the coiling.
There is a little separation of the staves in places but this is due to age and normal wearing.
The basket is approx.
12" wide and 1 1/2" tall
.
The Tohono O’odham, as they are known today, or “Papago” people as they were called by the Spanish, live in the Sonoran desert country of southwest Arizona.
The ancient name they called themselves was “Tohono Aw-aw-tam”, or the Desert People.
