Most of Oklahoma was set aside as Indian Territory before the Civil War. It was opened for general settlement around 1890—the "Sooners" were settlers who jumped the gun. Statehood came to the poor ranching and farming state in Oklahoma, but soon oil was discovered and new wealth poured in.
On a personal note in the 1890's my Great Grandfather, Franklin Rouse, left Iowa in a wagon with his wife, Estella, and 2 babies (Harry & Stanley), pulled by a team of horses with a milk cow tethered to the back of the wagon (Horse's and Cow names not known).
They sold their farm in Iowa and left in pursuit of a new life of farming on free land in Oklahoma.
When they arrived they found houses made of adobe and not a tree in sight. Farming the drought stricken land didn't look promising so they headed back through Kansas and Nebraska
and within 1 year came back to settle in Lucas County, Iowa.
I still have family all over South-Central Iowa including Lucas.
Had my Great Grandfather taken the free land and stuck it out in Oklahoma, he would have been one of the many oil barons of that region and I wouldn't be writing about it.
Instead I would be counting all my millions at the tune of .85 per gallon of gasoline....Thanks Grandpa !
