    Published by The Society of Experimental Test Pilots & Taylor Publishing, Covina, California. 1978 First edition, Hardbound in textured blue cloth with raised gilt lettering on the front cover and spine, 11.25” x 9”, 400 pages, blue endpapers, profusely illustrated throughout with captioned b&w photographs. Scarce, only 19 copies held in OCLC collections worldwide.
    Describes the origins of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots from 1955 to 1975.
    NASA astronaut Neil Armstrong was a charter member of SETP. In the early 1950’s he was one of the first test pilots who joined together to create SETP. Armstrong flew research aircraft including the B-29, B-47, P-51, F-100, and X-15 long before he became the first person to walk on the moon. Test pilots like Neil Armstrong flew the X-15 rocket plane during the 1960s in a scientific quest that yielded new technologies for space travel. Many SETP X-15 research pilots were given astronaut status for their high altitude missions in the special rocket plane. The Space Age was born with the blending of air and space travel. Interestingly, during the first SETP banquet in October 1957, the Soviet Union shocked the world by launching Sputnik. At the 1969 SETP annual meeting, Armstrong described the lunar landing to the gathered experimental test pilots. Later at the banquet, he sat next to Charles Lindbergh, who was inducted that year into the Society as an Honorary Fellow.
