    Description

On the basket tag it says Papago Indian baskets are handmade from Yucca plant (white or green) and Devil Claw (black) with Bear Grass as the coil base.  The split stitch baskets are made of Bear Grass and sewn with Yucca in such a manner that the coil is exposed to form part of the pattern.  A lot of work, effort and knowledge is required to prepare the material even before the weaving begins!  The weaving is a very slow process and one of the oldest of Indian crafts.
The appearance of this basket resembles a long needle basket of the northern Arizona mountain tribes but is really Yucca or Devil Claw finely split and woven with Bear Grass.
This basket came with it's original tag the Artist's signature is Sally luna.
Approximate measurements with the lid in place:  4 inches tall by 1 and 3/4 inches across the bottom and 2 inches opening diameter.
