Description
Being offered is a vintage, Makah Indian, hand crafted basket. The basket shows some birds that look like ducks with 2 men in a boat. I would assume this was a hunting scene. The basket does show age and some age related coloration. Overall, the basket looks intact, with no missing portions, staves are intact, and the weave remains tight. The basket is a bit floppy but this is characteristic of Makah and Nootka baskets. Their baskets are crafted from cedar bark, bear grass and raffia, as well as other native grasses. Approx. 2 5/8" tall by 4 3/4" by 4 7/8" at the top rims. SH price includes insurance.I found some information on the Makah on the Wikipedia website which stated, "The Makah are an indigenous people of the Pacific Northwest Coast living in Washington, in the northwestern part of the continental United States. Linguistically and ethnographically, they are closely related to the Nuu-chah-nulth (Nootka) and Ditidaht peoples of the West Coast of Vancouver Island, who live across the Strait of Juan de Fuca in British Columbia, Canada. The Makah Indian Tribe own the Makah Indian Reservation on the northwest tip of the Olympic Peninsula; it includes Tatoosh Island. They live in and around the town of Neah Bay, Washington, a small fishing village. The Makah people refer to themselves as Kwih-dich-chuh-ahtx (Qʷidiččaʔa·tx̌) which translates to somewhere near to "the people who live by the rocks and seagulls"
