    Description

This is a beautifully woven Hopi Indian basket from the Southwest US, made in the early-to-mid 1900s. The older (ca. 1950s) baskets were woven with thick (1/2 inch wide) coils.  This basket is woven of the traditional Hopi coil weave and decorated with a turtle pattern with a center shell, head, tail, and four feet with claws. The basket was crafted in a shallow dish shape using only natural dyes, and has developed a nice aged patina. There's a coiled loop handle on the back so that the basket can be hung on a wall. This is a classic version of the traditional Hopi coil baskets, and it would have been made on the Second Mesa. As you can see, this well-made old Hopi coil basket displays very well. The basket measures 12.25" diameter and the coil is 1/2" wide. It is in very good condition. All the wraps are intact and there are no separated coils, or loose places.
