The Papago Indian reservation is just south of Tucson. The Papago tribe is called Tohono O'odham Nation ,which means "People of the Desert".
Made with white yucca stalks and bear grass.
    No brochure~artist unknown
Leather rope looping~ accent on edge with brown star outline.
    Measures approx.~6 3/4 x 6 3/4"
The basket is tightly woven and solid. It is a beautiful piece of the oldest of Indian crafts! Thanks for looking!
"Leather rope looping" and the black material in the interior is from the Devil's Claw plant. The "fruit" is gathered in the summer after it's ripe, dry and opened up- clawlike looking. The basketry is done in the fall and the black exterior of the fruit (pod) is soaked in water, stripped off and then utilized. ~Thanks for the info,Chuck!! :)
