Scarce and detailed first edition of the autobiography of James G. Blaine (1830–1893), the noted American statesman and Republican politician who represented Maine in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1863 to 1876, serving as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1869 to 1875, and then in the United States Senate from 1876 to 1881 and notably twice served as Secretary of State (1881, 1889–1892)
, one of only two persons to hold the position under three separate presidents (the other being Daniel Webster), and unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for President in 1876 and 1880 before
winning the Republican Presidential nomination in 1884, whereupon in the general election, he was narrowly defeated by Democrat Grover Cleveland
. Handsomely
bound in full tan calf leather, with gilt ruled decorations and red and black title panels to the spines
. Small bookseller's label to the front pastedown of v.1, with the front hinge of v.1 being tender and some mild darkening to the endpapers of v.2. The boards are lightly worn along the edges and joints, with the corners just showing on v.1 and some mild scuffing overall.
Overall, quite RARE and quite a HANDSOME set
