Description
: Rare, double pie basket with double fixed handles. Probably mid 20th Century. Unsigned.
This is an old Maine splint basket. It is nearly identical to one shown on Plate 14 in the book
The Baskets of Rural America
by Gloria Roth Teleki. The book says the Plate 14 double pie basket was made in the town of Perry Maine. This is the only double pie basket we have ever had for sale. Not an easy basket to find!
The Native American people of Maine primarily come from the Abenaki, Passamaquoddy, Penobscot, Maliseet, and Mi'kmaq nations, all of which have basket making traditions.
Size
: each compartment is approximately 12” diameter x 4” tall on inside. The basket is overall 14” tall (top of handle) x 15” wide at handles.
Condition
: used. very nice condition with some few disbursed short splint breaks and chipping of a few splint edges in areas. It has two minor issues on handle. The handle wrap has two short wrap breaks, one at top and one on the side (thankfully it is not loose). Otherwise it is in very nice condition and is an excellent example of this type of double basket.
