    First edition
    . Octavos.
Notably rare autobiography, broken down across two volumes "1811-1838" and "1838-1845" of Charles Sumner (1811–1874), the noted American statesman and United States Senator from Massachusetts, who was an academic lawyer and a powerful orator, Sumner was the leader of the anti-slavery forces in the state and a leader of the Radical Republicans in the U.S. Senate during the American Civil War and who during Reconstruction fought to minimize the power of the ex-Confederates and guarantee equal rights to the freedmen
. Bound in the publisher's burgundy cloth covered boards, with gilt-stamped spine titles and black decorations. Hinges tender, previous owner's vintage ink signature to a blank prefatory page and a bookplate to the front pastedown on each volume. The board are a bit shelfworn, with some sunning along the spine and spine head cloth torn.
