    Description

The best first hand account of a whaling voyage in the early 19th century I have read.  The book contains numerous engravings on steel and wood as illustrations.  The author joined the crew of a Whaling Ship in New Bedford, MA in 1842 which took him to the South Atlantic, Indian Ocean, Zanzibar, etc. and used as the subject of this very interesting book.  When I purchased the book, its spine was gone and the covers and pages were all loose.  I had it professionally restored keeping all original covers and pages replacing the spine with leather.  The title is embossed with gold lettering on the leather spine.  The title page is a facsimile copy and was the only page missing.  Many pages contain spotting, some water marks, and have fold marks left by lazy readers.  However, it is complete, very legible, and tight.  I have read this copy myself.  This IS a rare book.  My last photo is from Abebooks where there are two comparable copies currently for sale for considerably more money.  Thank you for your interest.
