Different tribes used different materials and had distinct basketry traditions, weaving techniques, basket shapes, and characteristic patterns. Southeast Indians such as the Cherokee used rivercane wicker and pine needles and Southwest Indians utilized willow wood and sumac and other tribes used swamp grass, spruce root, birchbark and other materials. Northeast Indian tribes utilized braided sweet grass and ash splints. As tribes became displaced, their basket weaving became more diverse adapting to new materials and traditions of new neighbors in their immediate environment. See pictures.
