At Hogtown Poultry we are a small family farm living in God's country in Florida. We strive to stick to as close to American Standards although it can be difficult in any breed , but especially Araucanas. We have been raising Araucanas for over 5 years. Our goal is to have fine stock for our children to show in 4H, have a variety of colored eggs to eat and homegrown poultry. We also love to keep Rate breeds going.
ARAUCANA History
Araucana breed was originated in Chile. Recognized APA colors are Black, Silver duckwing, Golden duckwing, and White. Adult males aracaunas weigh anywhere from 5 lbs to 6 lbs .Adult Females araucanas weigh anywhere from 4 lbs to 5 lbs . Aracaunas that meet the breed standard of tufted and rumpless however they are hard to breed because the percentage of chicks that die in their shell. Aracaunas are famous for laying blue egg. Aracaunas shouldn't be confused with easter eggers. Araucanas have pea combs and four toes. Araucana lays 180 eggs to 200 eggs a year. You do not want a aracauna with out a pea comb it does not meet the standard breed.
Aracaunas lay different colored blue eggs. They often get confused with the Ameraucana they are NOT the same.
True rumpless tufted araucana chicks are not the way they are all born. EVEN After generations of rumpless to rumpless araucana breeding with one or both parents tufted some may be born with tails full or partial. Some will be clean faced and some will have a tuft and few will be double tufted sometimes unfortunately will have a tail bud. Here in the UNITED STATES we only accept True double tufted rumpless araucana for the APA show ring. In Britain the UNITED KINGDOM they like tailed, but either way the chicks are beautiful and we adore their "earrings". Which can be something fun to look at even it's not show quality :) The south American Indians like the earrings and the rumplessness because they believed predators wouldn't be able to catch the chickens as easily. Also known and famous through Martha Stewart for their blue eggs. There is also research that is being done on the rumpless trait of the rumpless araucana and it's genetic traits related to the gene that may cause spina bifida. This breed is a rare breed that is on the livestock conservatory for a study group. Due to genetic problems with the Tufted gene a percentage of chicks die in the Shell before hatch. This is just a more intriguing reason to breed them.
RECOMMENDATIONS for Shipped eggs
Your eggs will be shipped through the post office (USPS) additional insurance will be purchased to cover up to total amount of your out of pocket purchase price. If you have an issue with the mail you receive take multiple pictures of unopened box and take up issue with the postal service.
When you receive your eggs open box carefully one by open and put eggs in a carton, on flat surface, pointy side down for 24 hours. Believe me they need the rest. Don't move them if possible during this period. Then have your prepared incubator ready and put them in Bator Egg Turner Off for first 24 hrs of incubation then you set turning. This means no turning for first 48 hrs in your possession. :) this is what has seemed to work best for us :) You will always have better hatch rate with eggs purchased nearby in your own territory than shipped eggs, but not the diversity as shipped eggs :)
No RETURN POLICY. Only ship to U.S
Thank you for taking the time to look into this special breed and our listing.
