Scarce issue of this definitive edition of this scholarly work of Indology and Hinduism by Abbe J.A. Dubois (1765–1848), the noted French Catholic missionary in India, who as a member of the 'Missions Etrangères de Paris' was called "Dodda Swami" by the local people who in this work extensively documents Hindu manners, customs and traditions via Indian cultures, traditions, thoughts and the varnasrama system
and who is remembered to have locally for having adopted the way of life, clothing, food (vegetarianism) and language typical of a Hindu monk or renunciate, and to have thereby earned the trust and respect of the local people. Bound in the publisher's blue cloth covered boards, with gilt-stamped spine titles. Contents lightly toned. Previous owner's ink signature to the front flyleaf. Small bookseller's ink stamp to the front pastedown and small bookseller's label to the rear pastedown. The boards are just a bit worn.
