The invention of movable type printing by Johannes Gutenberg was the beginning of a revolution which played a crucial role in the development of the Renaissance, the Protestant Reformation, the translation of the Bible into the vernacular and the expansion of science as well as laying the material basis for a knowledge based economy and the spread of educating the masses. Yet for all of that Gutenberg spent many hours in court suing and being sued for debt. In the end, having borrowed money against his new invention, Gutenberg was forced into bankruptcy by his business partners who would capitalize on their investment of his invention. It doesn't seem right, does it? How could a man get himself into such deep trouble? No one knows for sure WHY he lost everything but it is suggested he loved wine to an excess. In fact the first printing press was made from a wine press.
In October 1987 half a copy of a Gutenberg Bible sold at auction in New York City for ,400,000.00. There are only 48 known copies of the Gutenberg Bible in existence today of the original 300 print run. Single leaves can sell for as much as 0,000.00. And to think the man who invented the movable type printing press died living on state aid just 13 years after the first book left the press.

Perhaps it was the alcohol that destroyed Gutenberg's life as it does millions in society today. Modern bankruptcy as a means of discharging debt may be legal but is it morally right? The Psalmist said, "The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again" (Psalm 37:21). We often excuse our actions but if one's debt is a result of overindulgence of any kind then for one not to pay a debt is morally wrong. Just because something is legal doesn't make it morally right!
DID YOU KNOW?
Once Johannes Gutenberg was sued in court by a woman who claimed he had promised to marry her. How many have willing fallen for that line? In the end, however, he won the case!
In 1465, 10 years after his financial ruin, Gutenberg was finally recognized for his contribution to the printing industry and given the title Hofmann (gentleman of the court). The honour included a yearly stipend, an annual court outfit as well as 2,180 liters of grain and 2,000 liters of wine all tax-free. Probably drank himself to death. But the legacy of his
genius
lives on today each time we open our Bible.
A Bible leaf collection is incomplete without a Gutenberg
